Google Search Console: the complete beginner-to-advanced tutorial

Search Console is the single most important free SEO tool you have — and most people only use 10% of it. Here's how to read every report and turn the data into action.

Setting up Search Console

If you haven't set up Search Console yet, go to search.google.com/search-console and verify your property using one of these methods:

  • Domain property (recommended) — verifies the entire domain including all subdomains and protocols, via a DNS TXT record
  • URL prefix property — verifies a specific URL prefix (e.g., just https://www.yoursite.com), via HTML file upload, meta tag, or Google Analytics/Tag Manager
Recommendation

Use the domain property if you can — it gives you the most complete picture across www/non-www and http/https variants in one place.

The Performance report

This is where you'll spend the most time. It shows clicks, impressions, average CTR, and average position for your site in Google Search — filterable by query, page, country, device, and date range.

What to look for

  • Queries with high impressions but low CTR — often a sign your title/meta description isn't compelling, even if you're ranking
  • Queries ranking position 8–20 — these are your fastest wins; small optimizations can push them onto page 1
  • Pages with declining clicks over time — early warning sign of content going stale or a competitor outranking you
  • Queries you rank for but didn't target intentionally — content gap or expansion opportunities
Pro tip

Filter by "Position: 8 to 20" using the comparison/filter tool to instantly surface your best near-term ranking opportunities.

Page Indexing report

Shows every URL Google knows about and its current status — indexed, excluded, or with errors. This is the first place to check when pages aren't showing up in search.

For a full breakdown of every status and what it means, see our complete indexing guide.

Core Web Vitals report

Shows your site's real-world (field) performance data for LCP, CLS, and INP, grouped into Good, Needs Improvement, and Poor buckets, separately for mobile and desktop.

MetricGoodNeeds improvementPoor
LCP (loading)≤ 2.5s2.5s – 4s> 4s
CLS (visual stability)≤ 0.10.1 – 0.25> 0.25
INP (interactivity)≤ 200ms200ms – 500ms> 500ms

For the full strategy on improving these numbers, see our Core Web Vitals guide.

Mobile Usability report

Flags issues like text too small to read, clickable elements too close together, or content wider than the screen. Since Google indexes mobile-first, every error here can directly impact rankings — not just mobile UX.

Manual Actions & Security Issues

These two reports should always show "No issues detected." If they don't:

  • Manual Actions — a human reviewer at Google has penalized specific pages or your entire site for violating guidelines. Requires a fix and a reconsideration request.
  • Security Issues — malware, hacked content, or harmful downloads detected. Requires immediate cleanup.

If you ever see something here, this should be your top priority — both can completely remove your visibility in search until resolved.

A monthly GSC workflow

Here's the routine we run for every client, every month:

Check Manual Actions and Security Issues first — should be empty
Review Page Indexing for new errors or coverage drops
Scan Performance report for queries in the 8–20 position range
Check Core Web Vitals for any regression since last month
Review Mobile Usability for new errors
Compare month-over-month clicks and impressions by page
